Ship Orders Slow as Fuel Strategies Recalibrate

DNV reports 36 alternative fuel vessel orders in May 2026, with LNG and LPG dominating as methanol commitments fall to near-zero

Alternative fuel vessel orders hit the brakes in May 2026. New data from DNV counted just 36 orders for the month, a figure that points less to pessimism and more to strategic patience among shipowners reading a complicated regulatory map.

LNG captured half of May's activity. LPG and ethane carriers claimed 42 percent, confirming that established fuel pathways are winning favor over emerging alternatives while the policy picture remains unsettled.

Methanol, once the rising star of maritime decarbonization, fell to near-zero commitments. Shipowners are reluctant to lock capital into fuel infrastructure without a clear long-term policy framework, and delaying those decisions preserves flexibility when the rules finally firm up.

DNV Maritime's figures point to a broader diversification trend reshaping fleet investment. Operators are spreading risk across multiple fuel pathways rather than concentrating bets on a single technology, gravitating toward fuels with proven bunkering networks and established safety records. Hard lessons from earlier rounds of speculative ordering appear to be sticking.

Consequences for adjacent industries are tangible. Yards optimized for methanol-ready vessels may see order pipelines thin in the near term, while LNG and LPG suppliers stand to benefit from renewed confidence in proven technologies. Investors and charterers will be watching order books for signs that regulatory clarity can trigger a fresh wave of methanol and next-generation fuel commitments.

What looks like deceleration is really recalibration. Shipowners who hedge now, building optionality across multiple fuel types, may be best positioned to act decisively once global emissions regulations converge and the path forward sharpens.
